The Moonlight Swing Living History Big Band was established in 1996 as a non-profit historical organization whose chartered mission is to keep the memory and music of Glenn Miller and the Great Big Band Era alive for all to enjoy. The majority of our charts have been arranged from either original 78s and V-discs from World War II, charts that have been donated from original artists or from our in house arrangers. The band is based in the Sacramento, California area. We have played a wide variety of venues since 1996, as intimate as a backyard wedding anniversary to as large as playing for the late Bob Hope at the Stockton Air Show in front of thousands of people. The band appears in World War II Army Air Corps uniforms or in 1940s style formal attire (white dinner jackets).

Over the course of the past forty years, virtuoso trombonist/arranger/composer, John Fedchock has risen through the musical ranks to emerge as leader of one of the freshest, most exciting big bands in jazz. His 16-piece John Fedchock New York Big Band is comprised of alumni from major big bands, along with some of New York’s finest soloists in the “modernist tradition”. The group delights in performing Fedchock’s own dynamic compositions and unique arrangements of well-known classics, creating a sound that not only honors but also expands the tradition of the American big band. The band’s five CDs on the MAMA and Reservoir Music labels have all received high praise from critics and extraordinary success on national jazz radio charts. In recognition of his formidable arranging skills, Fedchock is a two-time GRAMMY Award nominee for “Best Instrumental Arranging”. Fedchock’s dense voicings, thick ensemble writing and unique swinging lines have become characteristic trademarks. Regarded as one of the most perceptive and versatile trombonists on the scene today, Fedchock’s reputation as a soloist is widely acknowledged. In addition to performances in New York City, the band has also toured nationally and performed abroad at international jazz festivals. The New York Times has applauded the band’s “cheerful syncopation, served with spit-and-polish precision”, and the Chicago Tribune has characterized Fedchock’s style as “an unabashed celebration of the large band format.”

The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra

[United States (USA)] New York New York
ProfessionalBigBand

Founded as Thad Jones/Mel Lewis and The Jazz Orchestra:Thad Jones, who was featured in the Count Basie Orchestra, and Los Angeles based drummer Mel Lewis from the Stan Kenton Orchestra, started the band in 1966 with some of the top studio musicians in New York City. The beautiful melodies and unique arrangements of Thad Jones enchanted audiences worldwide. The mixture of the music from diverse backgrounds created their innovative sound and the band was quickly recognized as a world-class big band. Mel Lewis and The Jazz Orchestra: In 1978, Thad Jones moved to Denmark but the band continued as Mel Lewis and The Jazz Orchestra. In addition to the masterpieces by Thad, they actively employed new and original compositions and arrangements by Bob Brookmeyer, Jim McNeely and others. Those new arrangements were complex and avant-garde, but they stayed true to their fundamental band sound and swing. Their excellent artistry sustained and grew their high reputation. Vanguard Jazz Orchestra: By changing its name to the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the orchestra created its own identity after losing both of its leaders. The ensemble cultivated its rich history while commissioning new music that made them the prototype of innovative big band music. 2016 marks 50 years of continued performances of Monday Night Live at the world’s premiere jazz club, The Village Vanguard.
